In early twentieth century California, the lives of Daniel Plainview and Eli Sunday intertwine, creating a gripping tale. Daniel, a former miner turned oilman, is a determined individual who stops at nothing to achieve his ambitions. He works tirelessly, often exploiting those around him for personal gain. His partner, H.W., is actually not his biological son but an orphan whose father perished while working on one of Daniel's drilling sites. Despite this, Daniel remains fiercely protective of H.W., recognizing the value he brings to their business partnership.
On the other hand, Eli Sunday is a local preacher and self-proclaimed faith healer. His family farm, which is home to a significant oil deposit, is purchased by Daniel. Eli, eager to finance his own church, seeks to capitalize on the sale of the property. The clash between these two ambitious men becomes inevitable as Daniel frantically extracts oil from the land while simultaneously scheming to acquire surrounding properties at discounted prices, with the ultimate goal of constructing a pipeline to the coast. Meanwhile, Eli endeavors to build his own religious empire.
