In The Emoji Movie, Gene is a multi-Expression emoji who sets out on a journey to become a regular emoji. The movie takes place in Textopolis, a bustling city within a smartphone, where every emoji has only one expression, except for Gene. While his fellow emojis embrace their assigned roles, Gene struggles to fit in as he possesses multiple emotions.
When it's time for the phone's owner, Alex, to send a text, Gene panics and unintentionally creates a malfunction that affects the entire phone. Fearing deletion, Gene flees from the authorities and befriends Hi-5 and Jailbreak, two other misfit emojis. Together, they embark on an exciting adventure through various apps, including Candy Crush and Just Dance, in search of a solution to fix Gene's malfunction.
Along the way, Gene learns important lessons about being true to himself and accepting his uniqueness. He also discovers the value of friendship and teamwork as they encounter numerous obstacles and enemies.
