In the movie Sam Was Here, set in the Mojave Desert in 1998, an unusual glow appears in the sky, creating a sense of unease. Sam, a door-to-door salesman in his forties, travels through the sparsely populated areas of the Californian desert in search of clients, but finds that everything seems deserted. To make matters worse, his wife is not answering his calls and it feels as though everyone is avoiding him. When his car breaks down, Sam becomes trapped in the empty and hostile environment with no human contact for days on end.
Desperately seeking some connection to the outside world, Sam tunes into a local talk-show on the radio hosted by a man named Eddy. The show revolves around discussions about a child killer on the loose in the area. As Sam listens to the callers, he starts receiving strange threats on his pager, which begin to psychologically torment him.
Slowly, people reappear in Sam's life, but instead of offering help, they attempt to kill him. Sam realizes he has become a target, forcing him to defend himself. As he faces this perilous situation, Sam also begins to question his own sanity. Is he really the killer everyone is after, or is he being driven to become one?
