In När Lammen Tystnar (1991), FBI trainee Clarice Starling is determined to overcome her West Virginia roots and make a name for herself in the agency's Behavioral Science Unit. Her boss, Jack Crawford, assigns her the task of interviewing Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a notorious psychiatrist and serial killer who has been imprisoned for eight years. Clarice soon realizes that Crawford chose her as a woman to evoke an emotional response from Lecter.

As Clarice delves deeper into her conversations with Lecter, she discovers that he holds valuable information about another serial killer known as Buffalo Bill. Buffalo Bill has killed five young women, all slightly overweight and drowned in natural bodies of water, with large portions of skin removed from their bodies. With the discovery of a sixth victim and the potential seventh victim being a high-profile senator's daughter, the pressure on Clarice and her team intensifies.

However, the case becomes more complicated with the involvement of Dr. Frederick Chilton, the prison warden, who sees an opportunity to gain attention and recognition for himself. As Clarice tries to navigate the psychological mind games of Lecter and protect potential victims, she must decide how vulnerable she is willing to be with a dangerous criminal.
