Coffee and Cigarettes
Details
Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) is a collection of eleven separate vignettes, each featuring celebrities playing semi-fictionalized versions of themselves. The vignettes take place in various food service establishments, where the characters meet over coffee, tea, and cigarettes.
The conversations between the characters revolve around a range of topics, but the central theme is the pitfalls of consuming coffee and cigarettes, especially as a meal replacement. The film explores the association between caffeine and nicotine, highlighting the unhealthy nature of relying solely on these substances for sustenance.
The vignettes are connected through recurring themes, such as the Lee family, who appear in multiple sections. There are also discussions about the differences between twins, the illusions of fame, and the nature of randomness.
Coffee and Cigarettes offers a unique blend of humor and introspection as it delves into conversations about art, life, and the human condition. The film showcases the talents of a diverse cast of actors, including Bill Murray, Tom Waits, Cate Blanchett, and Iggy Pop.
With its clever dialogue and unconventional storytelling, Coffee and Cigarettes provides an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of the complexities of human interaction. This film is a must-watch for fans of independent cinema and those who appreciate intelligent, dialogue-driven narratives.
