In Law Abiding Citizen, Clyde Shelton's life is shattered when his wife and daughter are brutally murdered. The perpetrators are caught, but due to legal technicalities, the evidence against them is weak. District Attorney Nick Rice strikes a deal, allowing one of the killers to testify against the other, resulting in a lenient sentence for one of them.

Ten years later, the killer scheduled for execution faces a horrendous death as someone sabotages the procedure. Meanwhile, the other murderer is found dead in a disturbing manner. Rice suspects Shelton of orchestrating these acts of vigilante justice and has him arrested. Initially, Shelton agrees to a plea deal, but he soon changes his mind, revealing a deeper motive behind his actions.
